Wow!  What a day.  We built, painted, and cleaned sets all day today.  And by we I mean Matt, Bill, Sarah, Becky, Heather, Emily and myself.  We got a lot done today but there is still more to be done if we are to begin shooting on Monday.  Actually Monday is all set so get ready Sorrow Hill is on the way and it’s gonna kick your ass!

I have to take this opportunity to thank one of my actors who has helped me every step of the way.  Bill Allen has been on location for the past month now doing everything he can to make sure this movie happens.  Without Bill I would not be where I am today and that is ready to start shooting this film.  Thank you Bill for all your hard work and dedication to this project, I will make you proud.  Also, Sara Albertson has been on location several times as well lending a helping hand and she was a huge help today painting the sets.  I am so very lucky to have such a talented and dedicated cast.   This movie is going to happen because of all the hard work you guys have done…Thank You!

Sleep is not an option…

As the pages peel from my calendar quickly approaching the start of shooting I find myself getting less and less sleep.  Don’t get me wrong, I love sleep, it’s one of my favorite things in the world but I find myself lying awake staring at the ceiling going over the script shot by shot in my head and if you’re like me a lot of times you just can’t shut your mind off.  People have suggested perhaps I should take Ambien or Tylenol PM but I’m not a big believer in self-medicating so I figure when my body is ready it will just kind of shut down…or not.  For now I will have to cope with the wonderful 3 hours I’ve been averaging, I feel like I’m in college all over again, except without all the college fun that goes with late nights.  Anyhow tomorrow will be another marathon day on location prepping the sets, building, cleaning, painting and everything else that needs to be somewhat done before Monday.  All I know is that I am ready, I have never been more ready for anything in my entire life when all is said and done one kick ass horror movie is going to be made.

My two cents…

Matt did a great job in his first blog and I agreed with most of what he had to say about the latest Indiana Jones movie but I will not dwell on what was wrong with the movie, instead I will look at it through the eyes of my 8 year old daughter…which by the way this movie is pretty much geared towards.  She loved the film, even the ridiculous part of Mutt swinging through the vines ala Tarzan with the monkeys…she loved the monkeys, anyhow she watched with wide eyed wonderment as Indiana Jones swept across the screen in all his adventurous glory, granted a little slower but still there he was doing what he could to fight those evil Commies…the Nazis were much better enemies in the earlier films but this movie takes place after WWII so no more Nazi’s.  I watched as my daughter and her friend grabbed each other in fearful delight when the large flesh eating ants attacked and I realized that this was exactly how I acted when I was her age watching Raiders of the Lost Ark for the first time…I also remember my father looking down his nose at what he called the ridiculousness of  Raiders, so although I was disappointed with the 4th installment I realize that this movie wasn’t for me…it was for my daughter and a new generation of movie goer and in the end that’s what it’s all about.

I can’t wait for the Strangers this weekend…should be a blast.  I don’t see huge box office numbers but if it can somehow range in the 15 – 20 million dollar range it would be a strong and encouraging open.

Before I go I just have to post this wonderful picture because it made me laugh…enjoy.

Things have been rather hectic around here.  So much to do before we begin principal photography June 2nd…sets need to be finished, test make-up on some of the actors, gathering the rest of my equipment, fixing my doorway dolley, wardrobe shopping, final script rewrite, finish shooting schedule…damn I need an assistant…anyone want to work their ass off for free?  Just thought I’d ask.  But I know I’ll get everything done by June 2nd…at least most of it.  Oh yeah, I forgot, I have a battle of the bands to promote as well for June 14th.  The next 40 days of my life are going to be chaotic…I can’t wait.  I have found time to watch Diary of the Dead…not sure how I feel about it, think I need to watch it when I’m distracted every minute.  On first viewing however…not overly impressed.  However George is a God and I will watch it again when I can give the movie my undivided attention.    I will also check out Indiana Jones over the weekend…why do I have this overwhelming sense of unease about seeing this film?  It can’t possibly suck…can it?  But alas the first offering of the summer movie season from the horror genre is on the horizon, The Strangers debuts next Friday May 31st…I for one can’t wait to see this movie, it looks intense.  Another movie I have been anxiously awaiting has had it’s release date moved again, Midnight Meat Train has been moved up and now debuts the same day as Hellboy 2…damn I hate to choose but if I have to…Hellboy 2 will be getting my ticket money that weekend.  Why would they move Midnight Meat Train to that weekend, I think it dooms it to a subpar opening, it’s original release date in August was better suited for it…just look at what Halloween did over the same weekend last year.  Wow, it’s 10:30 and I just realized I have a yard sale going on tomorrow…then the softball team I coach has practice, then I have to prepare for my radio show…I am the busiest unemployed person in the world.

It’s really happening…

After months of hand wringing, money begging, script rewriting, and just general chaos it’s official we begin shooting Sorrow Hill June 2nd.  The last couple of weeks have been unreal but now all the B.S. is behind me and we are making this movie.  Last night was our first table read, we held it on location the Atlantic City Racetrack and my God did my cast come loaded for bear.  There were a few minor hiccups during the read but at the end of the read I was in awe.  For most of my cast this is their first motion picture, you wouldn’t be able to tell by the way they performed, last night made me want to start shooting that very second but we have a lot of incidentals to take care of in the next couple of weeks before we start so I will be working relentlessly to finish them.  Test make-up, wardrobe, props, are just some of the things that still need to be addressed.  Not to mention a few re-writes to the script.  The table read last night opened my eyes to a few things that needed to be reworked.  It was nice to hear other voices reading my words besides the ones that reside in my head.  Keep coming back for updates and photos from the set during the shoot, I want to try and post production diaries during filming but that all depends on how exhausted I am.

Conflicted…

On May 20th one of my favorite movies Night of the Living Dead gets a digitally remasterd release and I for one am not sure what to do. This movie has been in the public domain for years and anyone could buy a grainy, crappy copy at the dollar store for…well a dollar and I for one loved it. Now, it’s on the horizon a nice shiny remastered DVD box set coming to a DVD shelf near you on May 20th.

I love this movie and the part I love the most was the fact it wasn’t slick and flashy, it was harsh, gritty in your face film making that launched the career of one of the most influential horror minds of all time. His use of space and inspired camera angles added to the sheer terror of this film and I know that won’t change with a digital remastering but won’t something be lost? I don’t know and that’s why I’m conflicted. I’m sure I will end up purchasing the DVD because that’s what I do…it’s an addiction of mine, I buy horror DVD’s.

Fraggle Rock the Movie

Every day news hits the internet about another remake or adaptation. Today I learned that the Weinstein Brothers have set the wheels in motion to bring Fraggle Rock to the big screen. My only question is why? I thought a Thundercats movie was bad enough, SNARF, but the Fraggles. Don’t get me wrong I dug the show growing up. I loved their intricate cave system in which they lived and their theme song will stay in your head all day if you hear it.
The reason why I dread this film is quite simply this, they plan on having the Fraggle’s leave Fraggle rock and have them interact with aliens…meaning humans. We all saw how wonderful this was when they went that route with the muppets…(what I wouldn’t do for a sarcasm font). I think I am going to invent a sarcasm font…mental note taken. Anyhow back to what will most assuredly be a disaster. We don’t need another bad muppet movie…why not have the Fraggles go look for Uncle “Traveling” Matt which was the rumored storyline months back. That would be cool, not having the Fraggles hit earth and interact with us…it’s been done! So, on the movie slate…these are all from the 80′s or earlier: Land of the Lost, MacGyver, Magnum PI, Thundercats, Fraggle Rock any of these got you hot and bothered and ready to plunk down $10 for a ticket…I know I won’t be.
